I have vitiligo; will I get married?
Do people with vitiligo get married?
A person with vitiligo should get married or not?
Many times, youngsters with vitiligo or their parents would raise above queries to me. My answer- Yes, definitely! People with vitiligo are as fit as non-vitiligo people and marriage should not be a matter of concern for them.
Vitiligo, also known as leucoderma, is quite a non-harmful and non-contagious skin condition. It doesn’t spread from one person to the other by living together, sharing personal stuffs or having a physical relationship. (1, 2, 3)
In medical terms, vitiligo is an autoimmune skin condition where the faulty immune system attacks the pigment (color) producing skin cells to damage them. It results in skin de-pigmentation in the form of white patches on various parts of the body. The exact cause of this autoimmune reaction is not known yet. The most commonly discussed culprits are- chronic stress, poor digestive health, severe nutritional deficiency, impaired liver, faulty genes, overdose of steroids and antibiotics, poor diet and lifestyle habits, alcohol abuse, etc. As the cause is unknown, accordingly the cure is also not available as of now. However, there are numerous ways of vitiligo management- Phototherapy (UV light therapy), topical creams, oral drugs and various alternative health therapies that include Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Naturopathy.
Neither vitiligo is fatal (life threatening) nor it is communicable in nature. In short, vitiligo doesn’t cause any harm to the overall fitness of a person except the physical appearance. But, due to severe lack of awareness among the public, people with vitiligo face problems in finding a suitable match for marriage. (4, 5) The height of ignorance is such that if one member of a family got vitiligo, then marriage prospects of the whole family come at stake. Disappointed with frequent rejections and delay in marriage, people often almost give up on marriage. In many cases, people with vitiligo are forced to make unwanted compromises in important personal and professional traits and settle for less.
This silent struggle doesn’t end with marriage, but, it keeps on haunting the person even after marriage. The thoughts like- ‘How my spouse will react if my vitiligo increases with time’, ‘Is my spouse comfortable with my skin’, ‘Are my in-laws and other relatives comfortable with my skin’- will trouble for many years even after the marriage. Also, there are incidences where vitiligo has become the ground for divorce in India. Hence, there is always a sense of insecurity and fear of judgement that can severely affect the quality of life.
To address this highly troublesome, yet ignored issue- Ashish Agarwal, a person dealing with psoriasis since 2005, has come up with an online matrimony platform (Derma Matrimony) for people dealing with various lifelong skin issues such as vitiligo, psoriasis, albinism, scleroderma, eczema, dermatitis, neurofibroma, burn, scar and other issues.
It is more of a social cause than a money making business venture. DermaMatrimony.com is the world’s only online matrimony platform for people dealing with skin issues. The idea behind Derma Matrimony is- Marrying someone with a similar skin condition will make you extremely comfortable in your skin and your life partner will accept you as you are. Both of you will embrace each other’s imperfections wholeheartedly with all the love and warmth. Your skin condition will not be a matter of concern anymore so that you can focus on other important areas of your life and achieve all your life goals. The family members, particularly the in-laws, will also support and accept you without having any unrealistic expectations as far as skin condition is concerned. In other words, Derma Matrimony provides an opportunity to say goodbye to all the negative thoughts and fears for the whole life. Isn’t it amazing?
Many people fear that vitiligo will pass on from the parents to the kids. Well, vitiligo has a weak genetic component and in 15-25% cases, kids may develop vitiligo if one or both the parents got vitiligo. But, it is all about chance. So, why to worry about something which is not in our control? Why to miss this golden opportunity of marrying someone who truly loves you just for an imaginary fear which proves false in majority of the cases? Moreover, if you help your kid maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle, the chances of vitiligo development further reduce.
Derma Matrimony can be browsed on desktop, tablet and mobile. It has a good user interface and provides 24*7 customer support via phone/email/contact form. To ensure authenticity of profiles, multiple verification checks like mobile number verification, email id verification and profile picture verification are implemented. Also, the website encourages the users to get verified their social media accounts and government issued verification ID’s for further safety. It’s really a wonderful social initiative and we are quite hopeful that it would bring happiness and positive change in the lives of many of the potential brides and grooms dealing with vitiligo and their parents as well. We wish Derma Matrimony all the very best in its mission to create a world where people with chronic skin conditions can find their soul-mates in a pleasant manner without making compromises.
